SUMMARY:Woodcock Watch
DESCRIPTION:The American Woodcock is one of our stealthiest birds\, but it’s also one of the most fun to watch when they do show themselves. On early spring evenings\, the males perform their mating displays\, flying high into the air and falling back to the ground\, making calls and sounds with their wings as they do so. \nDuring this program we will give a brief introduction to these interesting birds and then we’ll go out into our fields where we will be able to watch and hear the birds perform. We’ll be watching the weather to pick a date that looks most promising for us to see a good show (if the weather is too cloudy\, windy\, or cold they stay hunkered down). \nIf March 6 looks good we will hold the event then. Otherwise we expect to pick one of March 14 or 15 at the same time. We will email you a few days beforehand when we know more.
Please bring a flashlight. We will be standing out in the field for around 30 minutes. We will have sit pads to lend out. Some people like to bring a small camping stool\, chair\, or blanket\, but keep in mind that we will have to walk about a quarter mile and we may relocate depending on where the birds are. \nCost: \nChildren 18 and under – Free \nAdults – $15 ($10 for Friends of Clifton.) All proceeds from our programs go directly to funding our education programs\, restoration work\, and research projects. Thank you for your support! \nAge: Adults and children accompanied by an adult. \nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. Please check your email for updates on the morning of the event. \nRegistration is REQUIRED. \nCancellation policy: If you register and can no longer attend this event\, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can open your spot to someone else. Refunds not given for participant cancellation. Refunds will be given if Clifton cancels. \nBy registering for this event\, you are affirming that you have read and agree to our liability release policy. \nWe look forward to seeing you at the Clifton Institute!

SUMMARY:Geology of the Piedmont Driving Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we look for signs of a rift valley that once cut a wide chasm across the Jurassic deserts of Northern Virginia. We will see evidence of saline lakes and rivers that carried water (and sand/mud) from the towering Appalachians when they were a young mountain range. We will also get to cross the remnants of huge lava flows that periodically swept across the valley. We will begin by descending the once rugged mountains lining the western edge of the basin (now the rolling hills around Warrenton)\, crossing the rift heading southeast\, and then emerging onto much older metamorphic rocks near Kelly’s Ford. \nThis year we will be following roughly the same route that we took in 2023 across the Culpeper Basin. This Mesozoic basin is one of the more prominent and ecologically important features on the Piedmont. It is also where some of the youngest rocks of the entire Piedmont occur\, marking the last major tectonic event along the eastern seaboard when the Atlantic Ocean was born. Because of this\, the rocks are minimally deformed and represent a bit of a break from the mind-bending complexity of the older rocks dominating the rest of the region. \nWe will meet at Clifton at 9:00am where we will check out some of our greenstone outcrops then head out toward C.F. Phelps WMA near Remington\, making several stops along the way. We will eat lunch along the way (please provide your own lunch) and wrap up around 4:00pm. \nCost: \nChildren 18 and under – Free \nAdults – $30 ($25 for Friends of Clifton.) All proceeds from our programs go directly to funding our education programs\, restoration work\, and research projects. SUMMARY:Piedmont Polliwogs 2025-26
DESCRIPTION:Piedmont Polliwogs is a monthly program for pre-K children that includes a lesson on a different topic every month\, story time and short nature walk. Students get to know each other\, grow their independence\, and gain confidence in the outdoors with our skilled instructors. \nThe 9-month series will take place on the second Thursday of each month from 10 to 11:30 on the following dates: September 11\, October 9\, November 13\, December 11\, January 8\, February 12\, March 12\, April 9\, May 14. \nWe understand that you may have children outside the 2-5-year-old range that need to come along with you to Polliwogs. You are welcome to keep them with you or for them to entertain themselves during the class. It is also fine with us if slightly older children participate. \nWhen you register below\, please register and pay for the number of children you expect to participate in the class each month! You can think about this through the lens of: will my child want to use the materials that they see the other kids using (magnifying lenses\, eye droppers\, stuffies)? \nRegistration Notes: *If you are purchasing tickets for multiple students\, please write all of their names together in the same box\, i.e. “Sam\, Martie\, and Alex Bradshaw” when registering. The form does not give you separate spaces to enter different names for each ticket.* \nCost: $90 per child ($75 for Friends of the Clifton Institute) \nAge: Children ages 2-5\, accompanied by a caregiver \nBring: Please bring a snack and drink. There will be a snack break. \nWeather policy: Rain or shine except in case of extreme weather (e.g. thunderstorm or significant snow fall). \nRegistration is REQUIRED. \nCancellation policy: If you register and can no longer attend this series\, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can open your spot to someone else. No refunds will be given upon registrant cancellation within 1 month of the program’s start date. No refunds will be given for any missed programs. You will be sent a liability waiver and medical form before the start of the program. \nWe look forward to seeing you at the Clifton Institute!

SUMMARY:Science Saturday: Vernal Pool Monitoring
DESCRIPTION:In this installment of our Science Saturdays series participants will have the opportunity to participate in our vernal pool monitoring project. Vernal pools are fish-free bodies of water that are safe for amphibians to breed in. Here at Clifton\, we have multiple made by beavers\, humans\, and natural depressions\, where Spotted Salamanders\, Jefferson Salamanders\, Eastern Newts\, Wood Frogs\, and other amphibians breed. Each spring we monitor the water levels and quality in each pool and survey for eggs and adults to keep track of our amphibian populations are faring. It’s never a certainty\, but it is likely that we will see adult amphibians in at least one of the pools. This is a special opportunity to visit an amazing habitat and to learn about the science going on here at Clifton. \nCost: \nChildren 18 and under – Free \nAdults – $15 ($10 for Friends of Clifton.) SUMMARY:Piedmont Polliwogs 2025-26

SUMMARY:Spring Native Plant Sale
DESCRIPTION:Native plants provide better food for insects\, which in turn provide food for birds. You can make a huge difference for wildlife by planting native species on your property. Since fall 2019 we have been collecting seeds of native grassland plants from around the area\, which means in addition to being native they are of local ecotypes. At the plant sale we will sell seedlings grown from these seeds of a variety of perennial wildflowers\, native grasses\, and a few trees. Some of our favorites include butterflyweed\, upland ironweed\, scaly blazing star\, narrow-leaf mountain-mint\, and gray goldenrod. Partners from other organizations will also have plants and merchandise for sale. We will accept credit card\, cash\, or checks made out to the Clifton Institute. We hope to see you there! \nWeather policy: Rain or shine except in case of extreme weather (e.g. thunderstorm or significant snow fall). \nWe look forward to seeing you at the Clifton Institute!

SUMMARY:Science Saturday: Box Turtle Survey
DESCRIPTION:In 2022 we started a collaborative research project with the Turtle Conservation Ecology Lab and Joe Kolowski at the Smithsonian’s NZCBI to study Box Turtles. We are studying Box Turtle movements and habitat selection so that we can learn when it’s safe to mow fields in our area. In the third installment of this event\, we will give a short presentation on what we have learned so far and then we’ll go into the field. Participants will help us search for new turtles to study and track turtles that are tagged with radio transmitters. This is a special opportunity to tag along with our staff researchers and see how field science is done. SUMMARY:Clifton Dragonfly Count 2026
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our sixth annual Dragonfly Count! Our goals are to learn which species of dragonflies and damselflies are found in our area\, to monitor changes in their populations\, and to encourage everyone to learn more about odonates. \nThe map of the count circle is here. The circle includes a wide variety of aquatic habitats\, including a sphagnum bog\, fish-free marshes\, lakes with abundant lily pads\, and a variety of clean streams and rivers that range from tiny seeps all the way up to the Rappahannock River. This interesting area has not received as much study as nearby northern Virginia\, but 72 species of dragonflies and damselflies have already been documented inside the circle. \nWe will divide the circle up into several areas\, which teams of people will cover\, similar to a Christmas Bird Count or NABA butterfly count. We will let you know where to meet closer to the date. The count is open to people of all experience levels. We welcome dragonfly experts as well as anyone who is interested in learning about these fascinating insects. \nThis event is free but registration is required. Email Bert Harris (bharris@cliftoninstitute.org) with any questions or if you would like to lead one of the teams. Please let us know if you live inside the count circle and you have a fish-free pond or marsh or a pond with lily pads or other emergent aquatic vegetation on your property that you would like to be included in the count. We are partnering with the Virginia Outdoors Foundation and White House Farm Foundation on this event. \nCost: Free! \nAge: Adults and children accompanied by an adult. \nBring: It will be hot and we’ll be spending time near or in the water. Shorts and sturdy sandals or rubber boots are usually best\, but long pants can come in handy as well. Please bring sunscreen\, sun hat\, binoculars (important)\, camera\, insect net\, and plenty of water. \nWeather policy: Date and time subject to change dependent on weather. Please check your email for updates on the morning of the event. \nCancellation policy: If you register and can no longer attend this event\, please let us know as soon as possible so that we can open your spot to someone else. \nBy registering for this event\, you are affirming that you have read and agree to our liability release policy. \nWe look forward to seeing you at the Clifton Institute!

SUMMARY:Young Naturalists Camp: Week 1 (Ages 7 - 12)
DESCRIPTION:*Please note that the website will say that it is “full” until registration opens on 10th Feb.* \nAt Young Naturalists camp\, children will explore the field station with our skilled staff and learn about the plants and animals that live in the northern Virginia Piedmont. Each day of each week will focus on a different topic\, so you can sign up for both weeks and still learn new things! \nEach day begins with a Morning Workshop where campers dive deep into the subject for the day\, which prepares them for the rest of the morning which is spent exploring Clifton’s 900-acre preserve.  After a picnic lunch on the front lawn\, students are given the chance to cool down by playing in the hose before getting ready for Afternoon Choices.  Afternoon Choices give campers agency in shaping their camp experience by picking what they prefer to do from a set of 3 options which are different each day.  These could include things like water coloring at the beaver pond\, hiking to the lichen rocks\, playing camouflage\, or foraging for wine berries! Lastly\, we give each camper a journal and conclude each day by sitting and reflecting in small groups before ending with Closing Circle–a chance to share what we liked\, what we were challenged by\, and things we’re looking forward to. \nFamilies are welcome and encouraged to register for both weeks but must pay for each session separately. Students will bring their own snacks and lunches from home each day. \nAges: 7-12 at the time of camp. \nTime: 9AM – 4PM\, Monday – Friday \nCost: $275 for first camper\, $220 for each additional camper. \nCancellation Policy: Cancellations more than 3 weeks before the start of camp will receive a full refund. Cancellations less than 3 weeks before the start of camp or failure to submit paperwork by the deadline made less than 3 weeks before the start of camp will receive a refund minus a $50 registration fee. \nPaperwork Deadline: You should receive a confirmation email upon registration\, which will contain a link for filling out your camper’s emergency contact form and liability waiver. SUMMARY:2026 NABA Butterfly Count
DESCRIPTION:Every year community scientists help count butterflies in 15-mile-diameter circles all around the country and contribute their data to the North American Butterfly Association (NABA). This summer we will host our 30th annual butterfly count and celebrate our 23rd year contributing our data to NABA! \nButterfly enthusiasts of all levels of experience are welcome! If you feel like you don’t know many butterflies\, this is a great way to learn and it’s always helpful to have more eyes pointing out butterflies. Participants will be assigned to small teams\, led by an experienced butterfly counter. We will share information about your team closer to the date. Each team will survey a variety of sites within our count circle.  We will meet at the Clifton Institute at 4 PM to tally our results over cold drinks (provided). \nCheck out what we’ve seen in previous years here! \nCost: Free! \nAge:  Adults and children accompanied by an adult. \nBring: Please bring a lunch and water. We recommend wearing long pants and a broad-brimmed hat and bringing binoculars. \nBy registering for this event\, you are affirming that you have read and agree to our liability release policy. \nWe look forward to seeing you at the Clifton Institute!
